Hi there! I’m Jen, the owner of Mind Heart Health. I’ve never posted a blog on my website before, but it’s time. Thanks for coming here to read it! Drop me a line if you have any questions.
I’m not gonna sugarcoat it. If you’re anything like me, you’re pretty flippin’ scared right now. A LOT is happening outside of our control and many marginalized groups are feeling targeted and unsafe; especially BIPOC folks and 2SLGBTQIA+ folks.
I love working with these populations. I want there to be better and safer spaces for people who are facing significant oppression to seek mental health services without worrying that they won’t be respected. I want everyone who has any number of sessions with me to KNOW that their identity and culture will be accepted and honored and their experiences will be believed. I’ve heard too many horror stories of clinicians questioning clients’ pronouns and challenging client stories. How is that helpful?
Seeing a therapist is a courageous and vulnerable act; especially in this political climate. I want to be a therapist who accepts and honors who you are while also providing firm guidance towards change.
Something I say a lot is “Therapy is not just for venting. You can vent to friends and family to find support and it’s healthy to do so. But if you’re seeing a therapist, it’s because you want help to actively change behaviors, rewrite expectations, set new and lasting boundaries, and address current barriers.”
Last I’ll leave you with some bad and good news. First the bad: Life is discomfort and pain. Those two things will ALWAYS be a part of it, so it’s best to expect that they will show up from time to time. Here’s the good: If you can find a way to grapple with the discomfort and pain when it arises, life just naturally improves and you will feel more content.
You might be asking “but HOW, Jen! How do I learn how to grapple with the pain and discomfort of life?” On that note, I’m starting a new 100% FREE Zoom based class once a month called “How to Feel Negative Emotions.” It will include somatic techniques that will be explained, demonstrated, practiced and honed. You should leave the class with specific exercises to use when you feel disregulated and are experiencing a hard emotion.
My hope for you and the people you love and who love you, is that you are able to take time to connect with each other. Focusing on your loved ones and local communities is a great way to resist the urge to bury your head in the sand and ignore what is happening. Read a good book, play a game of Scrabble, have some deep conversations with people you trust.
Sending all of you the biggest ball
of light and good energy that I can muster. I’ll keep you posted about that class! In the meantime, if I sound like I might be a good fit for you, drop me a line.
We’re gonna get through this together. I promise that you were made to withstand this😉
